"Whenever I think about needing support in leadership and culture, this is the work that Advance does, and they’re my first phone call"
Breedon Surfacing Solutions is one of the UK's largest surfacing contractors.
James Haluch, Managing Director, Breedon Surfacing Solutions, wanted to take his established leadership team from good to great.
With a robust and dynamic business growth strategy in place, James was looking for a way to bring fresh energy into the team and challenge them to work better together.
Having previously collaborated with Advance for over a decade, James entrusted their support with the next stage of his team’s development.
Advance specialises in leadership, team development and organisational performance, helping individuals and teams unlock their potential at every level. With no specific “pain point” to address, this was an opportunity to pause, reflect and build momentum for the future.
The leadership team had been stable and successful for some time. This project wasn’t about fixing dysfunction, it was about raising the bar even further.
James wanted to invest in his people, providing them with the space to reflect, understand their individual and team dynamics, and sharpen their focus as they deliver the company’s strategic goals.
The brief to Advance was simple: help us be even better.
The approach
Advance designed a development journey focused on building self-awareness, improving professional collaboration, and strengthening the team’s ability to deliver collective results.
As part of that process, Advance used a profiling tool called GCIndex ®, which offers insight into how individuals prefer to make an impact at work. While not the centrepiece, it sparked robust and challenging conversations about roles, energy, and ways of working.
The programme included:
Each leader completed a short GCIndex® profile, followed by a one-to-one review session to explore their personal working style and strengths, focusing on understanding where energy drivers and motivations sit across five different working styles.
Advance then brought everyone together for a structured facilitated workshop. The session helped the group explore how they work as a team, where they complement each other, and how to harness their collective strengths.
With the business strategy already in place, the session helped translate that into practical ways the team could work more effectively together to deliver.
The outcome
Along with the individual insights from the profiling, the in-person session reinforced the trust and cohesion already present in the team, while surfacing new insights around individual strengths, leadership styles and team dynamics.
It gave people the time and space to step back from day-to-day operations and reconnect with their purpose and collective impact.
For James, investing in his team is central to his leadership style – he focuses on proactively developing people, rather than just reacting to issues as they arise. He didn’t consider other providers, stating:
“Whenever I think about needing support in leadership and culture, this is the work that Advance does, and they’re my first phone call”.
